To be fair, Trump is not named once (bless the search function in electronic books) but the absurd and populist world created is far too recognisable. Our protagonist appears – everything in this novel only appears to be anything! – to be Ismael Smile, a travelling salesman from India, on roads of Trump’s America. It is dazzling – but being dazzled is not always the most comfortable experience! This is the sort of novel I feel the need to reach for metaphor to describe, tired and cliched metaphors at that: it is a roller coaster, a kaleidoscope, a hall of mirrors, shifting sands….
